The Dark Night, Warner's Batman blockbuster, remains atop the North American box office leaderboard for a third straight week, earning $43.8 million from Friday through Sunday. Universal's "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" wasn't far behind, taking in $42.5 million on its opening weekend. Dark Night's total take is a few bucks shy of $395 million, well on its way to ranking in the top five all time in terms of ticket sales. I haven't seen the Dark Night yet, but can't wait to grab a bucket of popcorn for that one.
I thought the latest Mummy movie might bomb, but it pulled in respectable numbers. I'm a fan of the first two movies, but have little interest in this one. In addition to getting waxed by critics, 'Tomb of the Dragon Emperor' is missing Rachel Weiz, who's character was equal in importance to Brendon Frazier's. Universal's done its best to hide this fact in its trailors. Nice try. But the fun, campy thrill ride provided by the first two Mummy movies can't be the same without the chemistry between Weiz and Frazier.
Finally, someone needs to hook Kevin Costner up with a good script. Costner's 'Swing Vote' managed a measily sixth place, pulling in $6.3 million.
